The short answer

Good subscription business ideas solve a need that repeats: coffee, pet care, car washes, bookkeeping, IT support, maintenance, learning and software. The strongest ones fit one of eight proven models (member benefits, consumables, unlimited content, boxes, bundled services, insurance, SaaS or minimum commitment), cost little to deliver each month, and have something competitors can't easily copy.

Key takeaways

  • The best subscription ideas attach to something customers already buy again and again.
  • Match each idea to one of the eight models before you build anything. The model decides your costs and risks.
  • Service businesses often have the easiest path: bundle what clients already buy into one monthly fee.
  • An idea anyone can copy overnight needs a moat: a unique product, a community, data or switching costs.

Say you start selling dog biscuits on subscription.

Great idea. Dogs eat biscuits. Owners hate running out. You set up a website, find a supplier, and the orders start rolling in every month.

Now here's my problem with it. I could find a dog biscuit supplier, set up a template website overnight, and we'd be in competition by the weekend.

I use that example in The Subscription Playbook because it makes a point every list of "subscription ideas" skips: ideas are cheap. Subscription revenue plus a moat is what's valuable.

So yes, here are 101 ideas. Each one is matched to one of the book's eight subscription models, because the model decides your costs, your risks and how you'll keep customers. Read the five tests at the end before you fall in love with any of them.

Which Subscription Models Do These Ideas Use?

A quick key to the eight models:

Model What the customer pays for
Member benefits Perks non-members can't get
Consumables Automatic restocking of things they use up
Unlimited content Access to a whole library
Subscription boxes A curated surprise each month
Bundled services Several services for one fee
Insurance Peace of mind and cover
SaaS Ongoing access to software
Minimum commitment A better rate for committed usage

Food and Drink Subscription Ideas

How Do You Pick the Right Subscription Idea? Five Tests

Run any idea through these five tests before you spend a dollar.

  1. The repeat test. Does the customer need this again and again, on a predictable cycle? If they need it once, it's not a subscription.
  2. The margin test. After product, postage, staff time, payment fees and GST, is there real gross profit each month? Model it with the Subscription vs One-off Profit Calculator.
  3. The moat test. If I copied your idea overnight (dog biscuits again), what would stop your customers switching? A unique product, community, data or switching costs. See how to build a moat.
  4. The starving crowd test. Is there a hungry group of buyers already searching for this? In Feed a Starving Crowd I argue that the market matters more than the idea. Score your niche with the Starving Crowd Niche Finder.
  5. The fair-exit test. Would the business still work if cancelling took one click? If your revenue depends on people forgetting to cancel, it won't last, and in Australia the new rules from 1 July 2027 will make sure of that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest subscription business to start?

Usually one built on a business you already run. A café adding a weekly bean delivery, an accountant moving clients to monthly fees, or a trades business selling maintenance plans already has customers, suppliers and skills in place. Starting from scratch means finding customers and building the product at the same time, which is much harder.

What subscription businesses are most profitable?

The ones with low cost per use, high retention and something hard to copy. Software, content libraries and service plans built on your own time tend to have the best margins. Physical boxes and delivered goods usually have thinner margins because of product and postage costs. Profit depends far more on retention than on the idea itself.

Can I start a subscription business with no money?

Yes, if you start with a service or content rather than stock. A coaching program, a bookkeeping plan, a members' community or a pre-sold box lets customers fund the first month. The Subscription Playbook's New Masters Academy built its video library by paying artists a share of revenue instead of upfront fees.

How do I know if people will pay for my subscription idea?

Ask for money, not opinions. Put up a simple page with the offer and price, and take pre-orders or deposits from your existing customers. If you can't get 10 to 20 people to commit before you build it, rethink the offer. A willingness-to-pay survey can help you set the price before launch.

Do subscription businesses in Australia need to follow special rules?

Yes. The Australian Consumer Law already applies, and new subscription rules start on 1 July 2027. They require clear disclosure of key terms at sign-up, notices during the subscription (expected to include reminders before trials end and renewals, once regulations set the timing) and an easy way to cancel. GST generally applies to subscription fees if you're registered. Design for these rules from day one.
