Panera launched an unlimited coffee and tea subscription in 2020 and widened it to all self-serve drinks as the Unlimited Sip Club. From 19 August 2026 it capped redemptions at 30 drinks a month, dropped the word "Unlimited" and raised the monthly price to $14.99, while the annual plan stayed at $119.99. A clear daily cap keeps the habit without the abuse.
Key takeaways
- Drink subscriptions drive traffic because a coffee is cheap to serve and members buy food too.
- "Unlimited" invites abuse and legal risk. "A drink a day" keeps nearly all the habit.
- Panera's monthly plan now costs $179.88 a year against $119.99 for annual, a big push toward a 12-month commitment.
- Exclude your most expensive items and build the subscription around the cheap-to-serve one.
- In Australia, changing subscription terms will face new rules from 1 July 2027.
Every morning, a Panera regular walks in, fills a cup with iced coffee, and walks out without paying.
Well, not paying today. They paid once this month, and every visit after that feels free.
That feeling is exactly what Panera was selling. And on most mornings, that customer also buys a bagel.
How Did Panera's Sip Club Start?
Panera Bread was the restaurant industry's subscription pioneer.
| Year | What Panera did |
|---|---|
| 2020 | Launched an unlimited coffee and tea subscription |
| 2022 | Widened it to all self-serve drinks (iced coffee, lemonade, soft drinks) as the Unlimited Sip Club, at $10.99 a month |
| 2023 | Added an annual option at $119.99 |
| Jan 2026 | Began piloting points-based rewards in 216 restaurants |
| 19 Aug 2026 | Capped at 30 redemptions a month, dropped "Unlimited," monthly price to $14.99 (annual stays $119.99) |
The pitch was always frequency. A member who comes in daily for a drink often buys a bagel or lunch too.
This is the Unlimited Content model from the book, applied to food. In the book I explained that "unlimited" doesn't have to mean a limitless supply of something. It's about the unfettered access subscribers feel. Panera's members felt free to drop in any time. That was the hook.
Why Did Panera Put a Limit on "Unlimited"?
"Unlimited" always carried fine print: one drink every two hours.
In July 2026 Panera rewrote the terms. From 19 August 2026:
- the program is capped at 30 drink redemptions a month;
- the word "Unlimited" is dropped;
- the monthly price rises to $14.99 (annual stays $119.99);
- free refills remain for dine-in customers;
- energy refreshers, smoothies, frozen and bottled drinks are excluded.
Panera still advertises that someone redeeming one 30-ounce drink a day (average price $3.99) saves more than $100 a month.
Why make the change? Panera didn't publish member numbers, so I can only point at what the terms tell us. "Unlimited" invites the heaviest possible use and, increasingly, legal risk around how subscriptions are described. A clear cap of "a drink a day" keeps almost all the habit for normal customers and removes the edge cases.
The Math Behind Panera's New Prices
This is the part most coverage missed.
Monthly vs annual, Panera's 2026 prices
- Monthly: $14.99 x 12 = $179.88 a year
- Annual: $119.99 a year, or about $10.00 a month
- Annual is about 33% cheaper than paying monthly
And the member's side, using Panera's own example: 30 drinks x $3.99 = $119.70 of drinks a month, for $14.99. Even on the monthly plan, a daily user saves more than $100 a month.
By pricing the monthly plan well above one-twelfth of the annual price, Panera nudges members toward the annual commitment. That locks in a year of visits and brings 12 months of cash forward. Our guide to annual vs monthly plans explains how to set that gap, and the Annual Discount Calculator does the sums.

Why Does a Drink Subscription Work at All?
Because the marginal cost of a self-serve coffee is low, and the member who walks in for it often spends money on something else.
That's the Member Benefits model and the unlimited model working together. The drink is the reason to visit. The food is the profit.
Where the gym lesson applies, and where it doesn't
In the book I pointed out that most gyms rely on members who rarely turn up. A coffee subscription is the opposite. You want members walking in every day, because every visit is a chance to sell them breakfast. That's why the cap matters. You're not trying to stop people coming in. You're stopping the handful who'd fill a cup six times a day and buy nothing else.
What Would This Look Like in an Australian Cafe?
Here's an illustrative example. These numbers are made up to show the method, so plug in your own.
| Illustrative figure | |
|---|---|
| "Coffee a day" plan | A$69 a month, up to 30 coffees, regular size only |
| GST included in the price | A$6.27 (one-eleventh) |
| Net of GST | A$62.73 |
| Member drinks 20 coffees | A$3.14 net per coffee |
| Member drinks 30 coffees | A$2.09 net per coffee |
If your ingredients, cup and labor for a coffee cost less than A$2.09, even the heaviest member is profitable before they buy a muffin. If not, raise the price, lower the cap or exclude larger sizes. The Subscription Price Calculator runs this for your cafe, and our cafe subscription guide covers launch steps.
A legal note for Australian owners. From 1 July 2027, new subscription rules under the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Unfair Trading Practices) Act 2026 require clear disclosure of key terms before sign-up, prescribed notices during a subscription and an easy way to cancel. Changing existing members' terms the way Panera did is likely to need clear notice, and the timing of prescribed notices is still to be set by regulations that hadn't been made as at October 2026. This is general information as at October 2026, so read our summary of Australia's subscription trap laws and get advice before you change existing members' terms.

What You Can Steal From Panera
- Offer "a coffee a day" rather than "unlimited." It's clear, generous and capped.
- Price annual at a big discount to monthly. Pull customers into a 12-month commitment and bring cash forward.
- Exclude your highest-cost items. Make the subscription about the cheap-to-serve drink that brings people in.
- Track what members buy beyond the drink. That attachment spend is the real return on the program.
- Write the limit into the name. If customers can only redeem 30 a month, don't call it unlimited.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Panera's Sip Club now?
From 19 August 2026, Panera's Sip Club costs $14.99 a month or $119.99 a year, according to its subscription terms and trade press reports. It covers up to 30 self-serve drink redemptions a month, with free refills for dine-in customers. Energy refreshers, smoothies, frozen and bottled drinks are excluded. Check Panera's subscription page for current terms.
Was Panera's Sip Club ever truly unlimited?
Not quite. Even when it was called the Unlimited Sip Club, the fine print limited members to one drink every two hours. The August 2026 change made the limit explicit (30 redemptions a month) and removed the word "Unlimited" from the name, which is clearer for customers and safer for Panera.
How many members does Panera's Sip Club have?
Panera hasn't published member numbers. What it has said is that the change sits inside its "Panera RISE" turnaround plan, which targets $7 billion in annual sales by 2028, alongside a points-based rewards pilot in 216 restaurants from January 2026.
Can a small cafe run a coffee subscription profitably?
Yes, if the cap and price are set against your heaviest likely users, not your average customer. Build the plan around your cheapest-to-serve drink, exclude specialty items, cap it at one a day, and make sure the price covers GST and card fees. The real profit usually comes from the food members buy while they're in.
Should a coffee subscription be monthly or annual?
Offer both, with a meaningful discount on annual. Annual plans bring cash forward and lock in a year of visits, while monthly plans lower the barrier to joining. Panera's annual plan works out at about $10 a month against $14.99 monthly. A smaller cafe might start with a gentler discount and test how many members choose it.
